Obras maestras del terror
Directed by Enrique Carreras
Synopsis
A chiller to turn your dreams to screams!
Three extraordinary tales written by Edgar Allan Poe, the Master of the Grotesque: a man who is dead but is not; a cask of wine and a meditated revenge; and a heart that refuses to stop beating.

Review by Chris Duck ★★★½
The third and final horror anthology included with the Severin Films release of Tales of The Uncanny was a complete surprise because it's not even listed on the packaging! Edgar Allan Poe's Master of Horror (as presented here), is a re-edited and redubbed American release of 1960's Masterworks of Terror. The edit trimmed it down to just under an hour, keeping "The Case of Mr. Valdemar" and "The Cask of Amontillado" and dropping "The Tell-Tale Heart." Of the two tales, both were kind of tepid until the shocker endings. For an unexpected film with tales of the unexpected, it's a nice little bonus in this set but definitely the weakest of the three films.

They say “Fortnight” and “among us” in this film.
Edit: I watched the English dub cuz it’s the only one on the Blu Ray but apparently it’s heavily cut down -

The voiceover and subtitle track both agree that Edgar Allan Poe “created a gender that made him forever famous.”

Not just a phenomenal rendering of a trio of Edgar Allan Poe's most well-known tales, but one which manages to tap into the same well of infectious creativity from which they initially spawned. From the opening framing device onwards, I was just so keyed into this thing.
And the overall "spooky" atmosphere really pays off at the end of each segment in masterful fashion. The "Strange Case of M. Valdemar" segment ends on an incredibly gruesome note, the "Cask of Amontillado" one builds to a moment of such casually despairing horror that it genuinely took me aback, and "The Tell-Tale Heart" concludes with a shot that seems like it must have been an influence on one of the more well-known…

The 'Tales Of The Uncanny' blu ray from Severin comes with three portmanteau movies as extras! What a treat.
First up is this, Master Of Horror. Annoyingly, this is an extremely cut down version of an Argentinian movie which portrayed an extra Poe adaptation which doesn't even get hinted at in this one. Not only that, but this movie is an hour long. The actual Argentina cut is just over two hours. So either the story 'The Tell-Tale Heart' is an entire hour, or there's a fuck load missing from 'The Case Of Mr. Valdemar' and 'The Cask Of Amontillado' too.
Even with this in mind, for an hour, hacked to bits version of a much better movie, this was…

It's a real shame that this English-dubbed version of 1960's 𝑴𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒘𝒐𝒓𝒌𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑻𝒆𝒓𝒓𝒐𝒓 has been edited down to two stories from three because these two are so damn good. It drops "The Tell-Tale Heart," leaving us with "The Case of M. Valdemar" and "The Cask of Amontillado," both of which are beautifully shot and directed, with fine casts. I'm going to have to find some way to see the full film with English subtitles. The wraparound story is unimaginative, only a maid reading a book of Edgar Allan Poe stories on a stormy night. But the segments have gorgeous period details and the screenplay pads out the short stories nicely. Valdemar doesn't stray too far from the source material. There…

OMG a movie I have been waiting to see for - what? fifty years and more - after seeing the trailer on TV back in '65.
To my pleasant surprise, it was worth it. John H. Harris dropped an entire story and shortened the remaining two for its American release, but what remains are truly excellent adaptations of "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar" and "A Cask of Amontillado".
Pretty sure that absent Harris' edits, I would have gone the whole five stars.

Originally, this Argentinian film was released as Masterpieces of Terror in 1960. Later, this version excised the third story, dubbed it into English and released it in the US. I have seen the American version, as well as Legend of Horror (which features the third segment). I initially watched the original version of this film with autotranslated subtitles from youtube. After that, I got the subtitles from the US version and matched them up to the South American version and used the autotranslation to fill the gaps. Its safe to say that I've seen this movie 3 or 4 times, which is quite the commitment and it shows my regard for Master of Horror.
